Storm Season Tips
Are you prepared for severe weather? Over the past year, South Carolina has experienced it's fair share of unsettling storms systems. All from the catastrophic flooding, a multitude of severe thunderstorms over the summer and the most recent tropical system. It goes without saying, you can never be too prepared. Below are a few tips to help you become a little more prepared for whatever mother nature may throw at you.
It is always a good idea to own a weather radio that can alert you of approaching severe weather. Since tornadoes often occur in the night time hours many go un-warned since their TV's, radios and phone are turned off.
Locate a designated shelter area of your home away from any windows and doors. Make sure that all family members are aware of this location and know to go there in the event of threatening weather. The most important thing to remember is to keep your head protected. I recommend bicycle helmets or any helmets that completely cover your head.
Put together a storm kit equipped with flash lights, a battery operated radio, extra batteries, a first aid kit, enough water for each member of your family for 48 hours, nonperishable food items and any necessary medications.
If you don't own a fire and water proof safe, I recommend purchasing one to keep all of your vital documents in. Be sure to keep yours keys on you during approaching severe weather.
Check the weather before making any outdoor plans such as golfing, boating, hiking, etc. If you are outdoors and a storm is approaching, move indoors immediately. Lighting can travel 20 miles outside of the parent thunderstorm. Lightning strikes account for more deaths in the US than tornadoes and hurricanes.
If you approach standing water the road, turn around. Do not try to drive through it as it may be deeper than it appears. Also, water moves swiftly and it only takes 2 feet of water to move a car. Only 6 inches of moving water can knock an adult to the ground.
Enjoy the end of summer and the start of fall but always be watchful of changing conditions.

This is a scary fact when you realize that if involved in accident with an uninsured individual, your insurance coverage is the ONLY coverage that you have. Does this coverage exist on your policy? Personal Articles
It is a little known fact by many home owners that items of value in your home are only covered up to a certain amount. For instance, your Grandmother's wedding ring which is appraised at $15,000, may only be covered up to the amount of $1500 combined with all of your other jewelry. The types of items should be listed as a scheduled endorsement to ensure that they are covered for their full value.
This goes for any items of value such as, guns, boats, antiques, silverware, etc. Ask us how to protect these items.
